Complete Setup Guide for a Takeaway Spot
Your takeaway shop is built for speed. Customers walk in, order, wait a few minutes, grab their food, and leave. There are no tables to manage, no waiters to coordinate — just a counter, a kitchen, and a queue. This guide sets up OtoPoint for a takeaway or fast-food operation where everything is pickup-only and the goal is getting customers back for repeat orders.
A takeaway setup is the simplest configuration. With your menu ready, you can be live in under 1 hour.
Step 1: Menu Setup
Takeaway menus are typically compact and focused. Customers decide fast, so your categories should be clear and your items should not need much explanation.

Option Groups
Keep option groups simple — takeaway customers want to order fast:
Burger Add-Ons (attach to all burgers, allow multiple selections)
- Extra Patty (+$3.00)
- Bacon (+$1.50)
- Jalapenos (+$0.50)
- Extra Cheese (+$1.00)
- Fried Egg (+$1.50)
Make it a Meal (attach to all burgers and wraps)
- Just the item (default, +$0.00)
- Meal with Fries & Drink (+$4.00)
Milkshake Flavor (attach to Milkshake)
- Chocolate (default, +$0.00)
- Vanilla (+$0.00)
- Strawberry (+$0.00)
The "Make it a Meal" option group is a powerful upselling tool. When every burger and wrap has a one-tap upgrade to add fries and a drink for $4, your average order value increases significantly.
See Adding Menu Items and Options & Extras for details.
Step 2: Service Points
A takeaway shop typically needs just one or two service points.
Counter (Pickup Only)
- Go to Service Points and click Create Printer
- Name it Counter
- Set delivery mode to Pickup only
- Print the QR code and display it prominently — on the counter, on a stand by the door, or on the wall behind the register
Window / Door QR (Optional)
If you want customers to be able to order before they even walk in:
- Create a second service point called Order Ahead
- Set delivery mode to Pickup only
- Print the QR code larger (A4 or A3) and stick it on your window or door
Customers walking past can scan, place their order from outside, and walk in when they get the "Ready" notification. This reduces the queue inside.
Since there are no tables, disable Table Service in your merchant settings. Go to Settings > Merchant Settings > Delivery Modes and make sure only Pickup is enabled. This way, no customer will ever see a "Table Service" option that does not apply.
See Setting Up Service Points for instructions.
Step 3: Merchant Settings
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Business Name | Your shop name |
| Categories | Burger, Sandwich, or whatever fits |
| Delivery Modes | Pickup only |
| Payment Methods | Cash + Card |
| Working Hours | Mon-Sun: 11:00-22:00 (adjust to your hours) |
| Currency | Your local currency |
See Merchant Settings for all options.
Step 4: Loyalty Program
Takeaway customers have low switching costs — there is always another burger joint nearby. A generous loyalty program gives them a concrete reason to choose you every time.
Points Configuration
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Points | Enabled | Every order earns automatically |
| Rate | 15% | Higher rate because takeaway tickets are lower and competition is fierce |
| Minimum Order | $0 | Even a side of fries earns points |
| Max Points/Order | 30 | Reasonable cap for takeaway order sizes |
At 15%, a $10 burger meal earns 1.5 points. This is deliberately generous — you want customers to feel progress quickly and stay engaged.
See Points System for details.
Challenge: Free Side on 3rd Order
Create a quick-win challenge that customers can complete in their first week:
- Go to Loyalty > Challenges and click Create Challenge
- Configure:
- Name: Free Side on Us
- Description: Place 3 orders and get a free side of your choice
- Goal: 3 orders
- Reward: Free Side voucher (create this voucher first — see below)
- Active: Ongoing
- Save and activate
Create the Free Side Voucher First
- Go to Loyalty > Vouchers and click Create Voucher
- Configure:
- Name: Free Side
- Type: Free Item
- Target Items: Fries, Onion Rings, Coleslaw, Sweet Potato Fries (select all sides)
- Cost: 0 points (it will be awarded through the challenge, not purchased)
- Save and activate
The combination works like this: customer orders three times, completes the challenge, receives the Free Side voucher, and uses it on their next visit. Three orders turns into four — and by the fourth visit, they are a regular.
See Creating Challenges and Creating Vouchers for details.
Step 5: Team Setup
A takeaway shop runs lean:
| Person | Role | What They Access |
|---|---|---|
| You (owner) | Owner | Everything |
| Counter staff | Waiter | Order dashboard, can mark orders as ready, award points |
In many takeaway shops, one or two people handle both cooking and counter service. The Waiter role works for counter staff because they need to see incoming orders and mark them as picked up. If you have a dedicated cook who should only see what to prepare, use the Kitchen role instead.
For a one-person operation, you can run everything from the Owner account. The role system matters more as you add employees.
See Team Management for details.

What to Do Next
Once your takeaway is live:
- Watch the first rush — see how fast orders come in, how the kitchen keeps up, and whether the QR code placement is visible enough
- Track the "Make it a Meal" conversion — if most customers are not upgrading, consider making the meal price more attractive
- Review challenge completion rates after the first two weeks — if the 3-order challenge is completing too slowly, consider lowering the goal to 2 orders
- Add promo stories for new menu items, limited-time specials, or seasonal offerings
- Consider a window QR code if you notice customers queuing inside — letting them order from outside speeds up everything
The single most important thing for a takeaway is the QR code placement. If customers cannot see it or do not realize they can scan it, they will queue at the counter instead. Put a clear sign next to the QR code that says "Scan to order — skip the queue."
